Objective
To create comprehensive catalogues describing geoscience data, publications and maps that are available from geoscience agencies and to provide access to the data via an Internet search engine.

Approach
In order to collect and share information from different sources, a standard must be established to maintain consistency in its presentation. A CGKN metadata standard has been created based upon the Federal Geographic Data Committee's, (FGDC), Content Standard for Geospatial Metadata

Agencies across the country have developed individual catalogues of their information holdings. Each agency is responsible for managing their own catalogue. Many of the catalogues are accessible via the data catalogue on this website and others will continue to be added.

The data, once found, will list a contact person and in several cases, depending on the collection being searched, you can link directly to the live data set, map or publication from the metadata catalogue

This catalogue has been integrated as the geoscience node with the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure.

Future
The addition of new catalogues and expansion of the existing catalogues will continue.
As well as making it possible to link directly to more live data sets through the catalogue, therefore being able to retrieve the information directly for re-examination.

As users register to use the catalogue, a service will soon be available to send an email notification to the user when new data has become available in the catalogue in their area of interest.
